High-speed steel cutting knife

A recent study on tool life cycle assessment revealed that a high-quality high-speed steel (HSS) cutting knife has a significantly lower environmental footprint over its entire life cycle compared to many disposable or short-lifespan cutters.

The research shows that a well-maintained HSS cutting knife can last for decades, requiring only minimal amounts of abrasive materials and energy for maintenance during its service life.

The research team tracked and analyzed data across the entire life cycle of HSS cutting knives—from raw material extraction to final disposal.

Results indicate that although the steel production phase is energy-intensive, the knife’s exceptionally long service life and multiple regrindability result in a much lower environmental impact per unit of use time compared to frequently replaced, low-cost blades.

“A properly maintained HSS cutting knife can have an effective service life more than 50 times longer than that of a standard industrial blade,” noted the lead researcher. “This ‘long-termism’ approach to tool usage actually aligns with the principles of the circular economy.”

However, the study also emphasizes that the environmental benefits of HSS cutting knives depend heavily on users’ maintenance habits and access to professional sharpening capabilities.

Without proper care, these knives may fail prematurely, leading to unnecessary resource waste.
