On February 25, 2026, an aerospace components supplier in Toulouse, France, documented performance gains after switching to a tungsten steel cutting blade for trimming carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) wing panels, because delamination and fuzzing plagued previous cutting methods. The trial, conducted over three 10-hour shifts, showed that the tungsten carbide cutting blade reduced cutting force variance by 41% compared to diamond-coated tools, leading to a 33% faster feed rate—from 1.2 meters per minute to 1.6 meters per minute. More critically, the ultra-hard cutting blade produced only 0.05mm of edge fraying, staying well within the aerospace industry’s 0.1mm tolerance. Over 500 linear meters of trimming, the blade showed no measurable flank wear, while benchmark tools typically lose 0.02mm of material per 200 meters. The supplier estimates annual savings of €62,000 in rework costs and tooling replacements. This advancement positions tungsten steel slitting blades as a viable, lower-cost alternative to CVD diamond blades for mid-volume CFRP processing, with additional potential in drone and satellite component manufacturing.
