High-speed steel cutting knife

Recent advances in materials science have provided theoretical support for upgrading high-speed steel (HSS) cutting knives. Researchers have found that adding trace amounts of rare earth elements to the steel can significantly enhance its overall performance.

Experiments show that incorporating a specific ratio of rare earth elements refines the grain structure of the steel, improving the balance between hardness and toughness. This enhancement allows the cutting knife to maintain sharpness while reducing the risk of chipping—particularly advantageous when processing heterogeneous or irregular materials.

“The amount of rare earth elements added is critical—typically no more than 0.1% of the total steel weight,” explained a materials scientist. “An appropriate dosage optimizes carbide distribution, whereas excess addition can lead to adverse effects.”

In addition, advances in surface treatment technologies have introduced new protective solutions for HSS cutting knives. Novel coating techniques can significantly improve wear resistance and corrosion resistance without altering the blade’s geometry, thereby extending maintenance intervals.
