How to Choose the Right High-Speed Steel Cutting Blades for Bamboo Product Manufacturing? (Part 1)

Consider the Material Properties of the Blade

Hardness:
High-speed steel inherently possesses high hardness, but the hardness can vary among different models. For bamboo product manufacturing, since bamboo is not exceptionally hard, blades with a hardness of approximately HRC 60–64 are generally suitable. This level of hardness allows for effortless cutting of bamboo while maintaining the blade's durability. For example, the classic high-speed steel grade W18Cr4V can achieve a hardness of around HRC 63, making it well-suited for tasks such as bamboo cutting and carving.

Toughness:
During bamboo processing, the blade may endure certain impact forces, such as when cutting thicker bamboo or splitting bamboo stalks. Therefore, it is essential to choose high-speed steel blades with good toughness to prevent chipping or cracking during use. High-speed steel grades alloyed with elements like molybdenum (Mo) and vanadium (V), such as M2 high-speed steel, offer better toughness than standard grades, making them more suitable for bamboo product manufacturing.

Wear Resistance:
Bamboo contains fibers and silica, which can cause wear on the blade over prolonged cutting or carving. Hence, selecting a high-speed steel blade with strong wear resistance is important. Cobalt-containing high-speed steel blades, for instance, tend to offer higher wear resistance. An example is M35 high-speed steel (containing 5% cobalt), which demonstrates excellent wear resistance and can maintain sharpness over extended periods of bamboo processing.
